Memling * 1440 Seligenstadt † 1494 Brügge
is among the best-known artists of the early Netherlandish school, a member of the generation that succeeded the school’s founders, Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden (he learnt a lot from both and spent several years in the latter’s workshop).
Memling was born in Seligenstadt, near Aschaffenburg, but it was in Bruges in the Netherlands that his career was to unfold. He became a citizen of Bruges in 1465, soon after the death of Rogier van der Weyden. (Text: Hermitage St. Petersburg)
