Janvier, Alex - National Gallery of Canada

Alex Janvier: Han-ka-so-ler
This major retrospective celebrates a lifetime of creativity, knowledge and perspective, gained through

love of the land, art and Dene culture. (25.11.2016 - 17.04.2017). Exploring his 50-year career through more than 100 remarkable paintings and drawings, the exhibition features works from public and private collections across Canada, and includes well-known masterpieces, as well as works that have never been on public display. The artist’s graceful abstractions originate in Denesuline iconography and combine representational imagery referencing an ancient past, as well as recent Indigenous history, including his own experience of the effects of colonization and residential schools. Exploring the Dene geocultural landscape of Janvier’s northern Alberta home, his paintings on paper, canvas and linen combine Indigenous iconography, contemporary realities and modernist abstraction within a personal aesthetic that is universal in its appeal.
